Simple Maths Test

Answer: 12

3+(3 x 3) - 3 + 3 = ?

As we know that we have to Follow the order of operations and we can solve this by using D.M.A.S Rule.
So by following this rule
First we will solve multiplication given in the given question. So (3 x 3 = 9)
Equation becomes 3 + 9 - 3 + 3
Then we will solve the rest of equation from left to right
so 12 - 3 + 3 = 12

  1. The answer is incorrect. DMAS only applies when in brackets. To get 12, the question must read as follows: 3+(3x3)-3+3.

    1. Ummm no. DMAS always applies. Parenthesis is a diff category. It'd be before DMAS but still, DMAS follows

    2. why not [3+3x(3-3)]+3

      Delete
    3. If DMAS applies, then you must do the addition first before the subtraction. So it would be 3 +9-6, and the answer would be 6.

    4. no when it comes to dividing or multiplying it is whatever comes first left to right that you do first. as well as with adding or subtracting..
      3 + 3 x 3 - 3 + 3
      3 + 9 - 3 + 3
      12 - 3 + 3
      9 + 3
      12.
just like when someone gives you a problem like.
      4 - 2 + 5 just go left to right.

    5. If you're saying "whatever comes first left to right" then the answer should be 18 but yours is 12. Your given example of "4 - 2 + 5 doesn't justify your answer to the problem's answer of 12.

    6. D) 6 »>DMAS<« ppl!!
      3 + 3 x 3 - 3 + 3
      3 + (3x3) - 3+3 Multiplication 1st since there's no bracket.
      3 + 9 - 3 + 3
      (3+9) - (3+3)
      12 - 6 = 6 addition 1st. 12 is incorrect!

  2. The answer is correct because PEMDAS Parentheses Exponent Multiply or Divide (from left to right) and Add or Subtract (from left to right)

  3. Tru .. they just want to try and mind fuck people. but they. don't even know the real DMAS

  4. I thought DMAS is Division, Multiplication, Addition & Subtraction so snswer dhould be 6.

    So 3+3×3-3+3

    3+9-3+3

    12-6=6

As in we multiply first, then addition and lastly subtraction?

  5. If u wanted 12 as answer then the equation is wrong

    1. The equation is not wrong, because the Order of Operations (parentheses, exponents, division/multiplication, addition/subtraction) ALWAYS applies. This is done so that no matter how an equation is drawn up, the right answer can be reached by simply applying the rules.

  6. (3+3)x3-3+3 = 18
    3+3x3-3+3 = 12
    (3+3x3)-(3+3) = 6

If you rewrite it with brackets following DMAS you have 3+(3x3)-3+3
If you then simplify by removing the first +3 and -3 that cancel out you are left with (3x3)+3 which is 12.

  7. There’s another way to understand this in this case only. Since 5 = -1 (mod 6), your question is the same as 3/(-1) (mod 6), which is clearly -3, which is the same as 3 (mod 6). help me with maths

  8. Parenthesis' are ALWAYS "implied" whenever MULTIPLICATION is in place. (Or at least that's the way I was taught)

  11. You know why new math SUCKS? Because it causes this kind of arguing. M.D.A.S. has been around for a short time, it was NOT around forever. OLD MATH didn't cause this garbage. EVERYBODY UNDERSTOOD IT WHEN WRITTEN OUT. Improvement? No. Another typical case of trying to fix something that wasn't broke, just so somebody could say, "Look how smart I am!"

  12. I did it wrong and still got the answer right.

    (3+3)X 3 - (3+3)

    3+3= 6 X 3= 18

    18- 6 = 12

  13. Get a grip, guys. I cannot believe the things you have suggested. SIMPLE ARITHMATIC, FOLKS! You overcomplicate by applying rules which do no come into play in this problem.

  14. just type the equation into Google if you think Google is wrong sue the pants off them...

the answer according to Google is 12.

    ReplyDelete
  15. And I was taught that in an equation like this you treat the numbers on either side of the multiplication sign first then multiply, so I got 18 ie
    3 + 3 x 3 - 3 +3 would become
    6 (3 +3) x 3 (3 - 3 + 3) = 18.

Never heard of this DMAS - but there again, I did leave school over 30 years ago, with an Advanced in Maths. Amazing how teaching has changed - and wonder if the change was for the better!!

  17. omg ppl how dumb are you guys...None of you were taught different if you attended public elementary school, BEDMAS has been in practice since math was invented (look it up). Brackets and exponents first, if there is none then multiplication/division then after that addition/subtraction...If you say otherwise your a moron and you need to discover google and go back to elementary school. If a 12 year old kid came and read all this stuff he'd be thinking god those adults are retarded. If you havn't heard of BEDMAS it's not because you weren't taught its simply because you don't remember
Answer is 12, if you get something different go google/wiki the question and you'll discover your absolutely wrong and you need to relearn BEDMAS

    1. You explain bedmas yet dont use it lmao

      The equation becomes 3+9-6= 6!!

      You do the multiplication first
      Then the addition
      And finally the subtraction

  18. You can't take logic out of mathematics. 3+3x3=12, to add -3+3 at the end will logically imply further calculation, giving the subtraction precedent in the sum. The subtraction logically will imply to subtract the sum of 3+3 from the sum of 3+3x3, hence; 3+(3x3)-(3+3)=6.

    1. Hey guys, if you think your answer is 12 or 18 please u need tutoring.I agree with guys if your answer is 6: 3+(3*3)-3+3= (3+9)-6= 12-6=6

    2. Yes 6 is correct...

  19. People the answer is 12..please go back and look up the basics because you are making yourself look real ignorant

  20. it is the correct answer folks... if you take a look again...
always remember, pemdas always the rule. you cannot change it nor erase it. here's how it works:
    3+3x3-3+3 =
    3+(3x3)-3+3 =
    3+9-3+3 = (you see the M first)
    12-3+3 = (there's the addition)
    12+0= (how does that happened?)

    the answer is this:
we followed the mdas rule. we 3 to 9. and we ADD -3 to +3... you got it right kid, it's interger...
3+9-3+3= (we will put it like this)
(3+9)-(3+3) = (we cannot add the 3 to 3 because its sign is negative, the minus sign... that's how it ended up 0. so here it goes:
(12)+(0) = (since 0 has no positive or negative sign)
    the answer = 12

  22. IF THE ANSWER WAS 12 THEN THE END PROBLEM WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS 120, THERE WOULDN'T BE AN OPERATION, YOU CAN JUST CHOSE AN OPERATION AS IN 12+0, THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL + SIGN SO IT CAN NOT BE A -3, SO THE END PROBLEM WOULD BE 12-6=6 ANSWER IS 6

  23. Well AFTER I did the multiplication, I did the rest every different way to prove that when ever you do multiplication first (which seems to be the only thing everyone agrees on, I still got 12. I did it that way because I was trying to see how people were getting answers like 15,18 etc. I always got 12.

    ReplyDelete
  24. After multiplication (I did multiplication first every time), I decided to do the rest several different ways to try to see how people were getting 6,9,15, and 18 as answers. I got 12 each and every time.

  26. Of course it is 12. That is basic mathematitcs from elemantary school.
    First mulitplications and then add/subtract.
If you don't believe it you can always check with one of the 2 following methods:
In Excel, put his in a cell: =3+3*3-3+4
    On a scientific calculator: 3+3*3-3+4=

In both cases you will receive the answer 12

All other answers and methods ARE wong and you need to go back to school!!!!!

  30. Perenthesis,Exponents,Multiplication,Division,Addition

    Subtraction.

    Lets break it down now:)

First thing first on the order of operation is Multiplication. This takes priority.

    3+3x3-3+3

    3+9-3+3

    12-3+3

    12-6=6

  31. So the real argument is dependant on the equality of the add/subtract layer.
